Starting Hearts is asking for financial giving from our supporters, partners, friends and local community. COVID-19 fears are keeping a lot of people from hospitals and calling 911 for fear of possible infection of the coronavirus. Additionally, the COVID-19 virus can have a direct impact on an individual’s normal heart function, making them more susceptible to sudden cardiac arrest. This means now more than ever that the public needs to be prepared with life-saving skills.

As most of you are aware we are working diligently to help and provide where needed most – with an online, interactive education training program. As most of you know, we are working with an amazing company, called Connect for Education (C4E) to do this. There is a significant cost involved and we must raise funds to cover it. Our focus of this #GivingTuesdayNow Campaign is to raise these funds for this much needed program.

This educational campaign is aimed at engaging the public in lifesaving techniques that can decrease the number one cause of death in the U.S., Sudden Cardiac Arrest. “I founded Starting Hearts in 2010 after suffering a Sudden Cardiac Arrest at the young age of 27. Since then, our mission to combat the rise of SCA fatalities has accomplished remarkable success as a result of placing lifesaving defibrillators throughout Colorado’s Eagle County. To date, I’m thrilled to say that we’ve achieved one of the highest per capita rates in the world and have trained thousands of people in CPR,” said Lynn Blake, founder of Starting Hearts. “We are honored to partner with Susan Ford Bales, SCA survivor and daughter of President Gerald R. Ford and Mrs. Betty Ford, as our national spokesperson for the launch of our Save More Lives Challenge. Susan joins our efforts to propel the national reach of this program and highlight the vital importance of SCA awareness. American Heart Month is the perfect time of year to spread the word about the many ways we can minimize this devastating and often fatal health event.”

With the help of SCA survivors and families impacted by the condition across the nation, Starting Hearts plans to achieve its ultimate goal of saving 100,000 lives per year by 2040 by engaging citizens in lifesaving CPR education and placing millions of additional defibrillators in public locations. The Save More Lives Challenge asks the public and those touched by SCA to donate to the challenge and participate in the campaign by practicing the CALL. PUSH. SHOCK. technique and using the hashtag #savemorelives. The challenge is also designed to ignite action for cardiac arrest measures from change-makers in government by raising awareness of Sudden Cardiac Arrest through online petitions that highlight programs and skills that could save lives.

“My life was saved by immediate bystander care and use of a nearby defibrillator in 2010,” said Susan Ford Bales, Honorary Chair and Ambassador of Starting Hearts. “As a survivor, I personally know how effective these lifesaving methods are and how we can vastly improve positive outcomes for so many. SCA impacts approximately 400,000 people annually and of that, an estimated 10 percent survive. I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of the Save More Lives Challenge and to help fuel legislative change in hopes we can start to conduct vital research to expand our knowledge of cardiac arrest causes and treatments.”

Those looking to join the Save More Lives Challenge can help by:

All funds raised from the Save More Lives Challenge will go towards implementing additional programs that help collect SCA data nationally to advance research studies as well as establishing even more effective CPR and defibrillation strategies. It has been an exciting September for Starting Hearts and being recognized for the work we have done this year both locally and across the country.

Starting Hearts is pleased to announce the 6th Annual All You Need Is Heart event, which will take place at Colorado Mountain College, Edwards campus, on Friday, February 9, 2018 from 8:00am to 12:00pm.

The event is held in collaboration with Vail Health, who generously provides doctors, nurses and equipment to serve attendees, including screening tests and consultations. “Vail Health is proud to partner with Starting Hearts on this important event, which promotes awareness and makes heart health screenings available to everyone in our community,” said Vail Health President and CEO Doris Kirchner.

The event will be packed with activities, including numerous cardiac screenings, valued at over $1,200.00, for just $99.00, from 8:00am to 12:00pm. Available screenings include Body Mass Index (BMI), electrocardiograms (EKGs), venous ultrasound, carotid artery, audiology, and cholesterol/triglycerides. Additionally, Q&A consultations with cardiologist Dr. Jerry Greenberg and internist Dr. Dennis Lipton will be available. Attendees will have an opportunity to browse a silent auction with items donated by generous local retailers as well as meet with a number of health and wellness vendors.

From 10:00am to noon, guests will enjoy a catered heart healthy buffet brunch, make their final bids at the silent auction and take advantage of special offers from the health and wellness vendors, who will make special presentations on stage throughout the morning.

The exhibition features more than 80 original Rembrandt etchings, exploring the artist’s long and prolific career as a printmaker. From approximately 1626 to 1661, Rembrandt executed some 370 prints that demonstrate he was not only a gifted painter and superb draftsman, but also an extremely experimental and talented printmaker.  A complete range of Rembrandt’s creativity will be represented.  Compositions include the mighty and the humble, landscapes and mythological scenes, as well as Bible stories and character studies.
